JEHANNE D'ARC ACT I

Joan of Arc (originally Jehanne d’Arc) is a historical figure I believe to be extremely misunderstood by modern pop culture. She was born in Domrémy in the north of France, some 75 years into the hundred years war. The same war that would later claim her life. She grew up working on her father’s farm. When she was 13 she claimed St. Michael and his angels appeared in her garden. She wept following the vision as she wanted to be taken with them. Jehanne had visions of St. Michael her whole life, particularly when the church bells would ring. She swore an oath to these saints, a vow of virginity. She often heard the voices of St. Margaret and St. Catherine. Both were virgin saints who were martyred for their beliefs and held their virtues to death. Their fates would be the same. Many experts speculate today that she may have been a schizophrenic, or suffered epilepsy. In the end, it does not particularly matter. It is not my place to say who or what she was some 590 years after she is gone. But my hope with this project is that you would think about it.
Jehanne’s story does not end on the farm. More to come.

Image of An Angel

The modern ideals of 'biblically accurate angels' have shifted the public zeitgeist of the angel into something more resembling the works of Lovecraft and other pieces of abstract horror. They describe angels as nearly impossible-to-understand, abstract beings made up of thousands of eyes, dozens of wings, and grotesque, frightful animalistic physical traits, Evoking confusion and misunderstanding. However, the majority of angels described in biblical texts were more in line with the older cultural conventions regarding their depictions. They are mostly Human-esque figures with some more than human and animal traits.
This Project: 'Image of an Angel' aims to return to the more conventional, traditional perception of a biblical angel figure without falling into cliche, chintzy trappings like a tinfoil halo The Angel presented here is a being of beauty, She is beautiful, ethereal with a calming, savior-esque presence, all the while maintaining an aura of mystery & incomprehensibility to her. Be Not Afraid.
